J.Huete International had the pleasure of participating in the National Strawberry Festival in Jinan Province, China, last December with the main purpose of sharing the international experience with projects for strawberry production and how the efficiency can be highly improved through the use of indoor technology in a controlled environment.

This is the first Symposium of this kind specialized in strawberry that is being held in China. Jinan City has a population of 9 million people and the region itself is exceeding 100 million people now. This area is well-known in the country for its agricultural production and, more particularly for its strawberry greenhouse production.

The Regional Government also invited a diverse group of university professors and PhDs from Japan and South Korea specialized in strawberry greenhouse horticulture. They could share their personal experience and technological innovations on irrigation, fertilization, different varieties with its characteristics and on the indoor cultivation.

We had the chance to carry out a presentation before a large number of growers, displaying our technology and the experience consolidated throughout the years with the execution of turn-key projects in China and in more than 30 countries up to now. In this sense, the human quality, the flexibility and the high reaction capacity as well as the adaptation capacity are highly valued strong points of J.Huete International, especially in this country with such a rapid growth and its very particular character.

During the visit we could also know first-hand the methods, the habits and the resources available in the country for strawberry growing and the quality of its production in the region. We found really surprising the quality of the strawberries and, particularly, the use of Japanese white strawberry varieties like the “White Jewel”. We were agreeably surprised to see the experience that they have in this area with this curious pineberry with a mixed flavor between strawberry and a touch of pineapple. The results are very good for a traditional method: very good texture, healthy and full of flavor fruits.

The cultivation of Cannabis is awakening the interest of many clients and investors in the agriculture sector, due to its medicinal use, especially in phytotherapy, also with THC and other synthesized cannabinoids, used to treat diseases or relieve symptoms.

DATA FOR THE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT OF CANNABIS GREENHOUSES.

The crops require a favorable environment in which they can reach the maximum possible production, as long as it is not at the expense of their organoleptic properties. What is intended with climate control, of course, combined with the rest of the equipment is to manipulate the climate of the greenhouse until reaching the optimal conditions or at least as close as possible to the optimum, thus achieving that the plant has everything what you need

One of the concerns of the producers is when condensation occurs, what means, that the greenhouse air is saturated and the temperature drops, creating a high thermal difference between interior and exterior surfaces of the greenhouse. It is in these cases when water condensation appears on the internal surface of the roof generating, among others, unfavorable effects on the growth and morphology of the crop and accumulation of water on the crops, soil and structure of the greenhouse, causing the appearance of diseases. This phenomenon usually arises more frequently in the early hours of sunrise, it is also possible at night and in the early afternoon, when the temperature drops sharply and the greenhouse has more humidity with transpiration. The problematic months are from November to May; in certain areas the worst periods are April and May, due to higher levels of solar radiation are combined with cold mornings.

With the aim of proposing solutions, Rodríguez Díaz, A. (2009): Prediction methods and condensation control techniques in greenhouses, doctoral thesis, School of Agricultural Engineering (UPM), Madrid has been consulted, which established an analysis to evaluate the effect of ventilation and heating system on the appearance of condensation, developing predictive models of the probability of condensation. The greenhouse that was used had a roof and side window, a thermal screen and two heating systems: underfloor heating and hot air. Its structure was made of galvanized steel and Gerbera jamesonii and Helianthus annuus were grown inside.

The effectiveness to avoid or eliminate condensation of the heating system was evaluated. Both the radiant floor and the hot air heating were tested without ventilation during the main night period. They were tested in five strategies to be followed, comparing the climatic parameters to determine which combinations had the greatest effect on condensation. The greenhouse situations were observed without heating and with underfloor heating and the combination of this with the presence or not of nocturnal thermal screen and the presence or not of nocturnal ventilation, with different degrees of opening of the roof window.

After comparing the values of the relative humidity inside the greenhouse, it was observed that the strategies that used hot air reduced the humidity from 27 to 34 percent with respect to the strategies that used underfloor heating and the combinations of underfloor heating with nocturnal ventilation got a significant reduction of condensation, 73%. The combinations of underfloor heating, daytime roof ventilation and night roof ventilation obtained the lowest values of condensation. The heating strategies that used thermal screen showed lower values of average daily condensation, due to thermal screen retains the heat and the greenhouse air reaches a higher temperature, decreasing the relative humidity and therefore the possibilities of condensation.

In resume, if you install a double inflated plastic coating on the roof and recommended in cold countries also on the perimeter, with the ideal combination of two plastics with different characteristics depending on the weather, along with our anti-condensation gutter and the use of the systems mentioned above, designed by our company according to the climatology of the area and the needs of the crop, reduces the possibility of the appearance of condensation at practically zero values.

Nowadays there is a global trend towards people and companies without an agricultural background are willing to invest in agriculture. They usually are entrepreneurs with economy or business studies that foresee a brilliant future in agriculture.

These entrepreneurs don’t usually inherit the plot of land and they don’t want to leave anything untied nor have their business to depend on climate conditions, so they choose to grow in protected environments, in greenhouses.

For them or those growers with previous experience that want to enlarge their facilities, we want to make a list of advantages when choosing a plot of land where to locate their new agroindustry.

This list has been made due to the gained experience of our engineers and salesmen talks with clients all over the world.

  • Terrain levelling. Some places have a light topography or soft grounds and don’t consider this point, but we have dealt with clients that have had serious problems when the time came to send the heavy machinery to level the ground or have invested a big amount of money due to a rocky terrain.

 

  • Quality and quantity of available water. It’s a must when deciding to buy a plot of land, to know the availability of water, to have it analyzed and compare that information with the total needs of the facilities to be installed and check if the crop to be grown is sensible to certain chemical compounds that might show in the irrigation water.

 

  • Amount of light. The amount of light doesn’t vary too much from one plot of land to another in the same area, but there are some elements that can make shadow during the day, especially at first and last hours of the day like trees or mountains, that can be avoided.

 

  • Low humidity. It’s well known that high levels of humidity are guilty of certain sicknesses in plants and, even if some crops need high levels of humidity during certain phases of their growth, humidity can be added artificially, while taking away a humidity excess is something complex and expensive.

 

  • Access to electricity. The amount of electricity that a greenhouse requires grows as does its modernization. That’s why having access to a stable power grid is a future insurance.

 

  • Main road access. It’s not only important during the assembly phase in order to carry up to the plot of land where the greenhouse will be built all the pieces and equipment, also during the growing phase there will be trucks coming in and out to carry the collected crops to their markets.

 

  • Existing winds. Wind is a double-edged sword, it’s needed to renew the air inside the greenhouse and to cool it in warm weathers, but an excessive wind speed may cause damages to the greenhouse structure. This can be solved with a natural tree wall. The source of main winds in the area is considered when deciding roof windows’ direction.

 

It’s not always possible to find the perfect plot of land that fulfills all these requirements and some of the problems are easier to solve than others but, growing inside a greenhouse is nowadays similar to a factory where, when you control all the odds, you decide the quality, uniformity and quantity of product. And that’s what attracts investment from people without agricultural background.

Advices for the design of your nursery

 

 

No two greenhouses are the same, the design of each greenhouse is conditioned by several factors:

– Climatic conditions: The greenhouse structure adapts to the climatic conditions such as wind speed, snow load, relative humidity, highest and lowest temperature, etc. to avoid stress to the plants inside.

– Crop: Each plant has several needs that can be satisfied with the design and several problems that can also be avoided.

– Client preferences: These can be esthetic, due to crop management, depending on the quantity and quality of local man labor, etc. and will affect the design of the structure and the systems inside the greenhouse.

The usual is that the plant, when it gets to the production greenhouse, is already formed and, even if it’s delicate, can support some climatic or sickness stress but, in the case of a nursery, the plant is at its most delicate moment so the environment must be constant and benevolent.

A production greenhouse must be designed in order to obtain the highest crop production and can include the best systems available such as heating, cooling, CO2 supply, artificial light, thermal or shade screen, double inflatable layer of plastic, etc.

 

The priority in the design of a nursery is to avoid the death of the seedling, so the systems are focused towards its wellness avoiding sudden temperature changes and maintaining the temperature as close as possible to the seedlings optimal one.

Therefore it’s the client duty to provide all the previous information and J.Huete’s engineering department to design the structure and choose the most adequate systems so that they provide the client the best possible results.

Importance of a good Mounting and Construction Process of a Greenhouse

 

 

Over the years, companies manufacturing Greenhouses of good technological level have invested in technology development, drawing on the experience accumulated in projects installed in different parts of the world, with different climates, for various types of crops.

 

Such is our case in J.Huete, we have installed projects in more than 25 countries, for more than 22 years, accumulating the knowledge that is the basis for our greenhouse models that include all this technological development. We use the best materials and take care of the smallest quality detail in the manufacture of our Greenhouses, which allows them to have the strength to withstand the loads of cultivation and extreme climatic conditions, as required. HOW TO CARRY OUT YOUR GREENHOUSE MAINTENANCE?

 

Las estructuras de invernadero están continuamente expuestas a las condiciones meteorológicas de la zona donde se ha instalado. Principalmente la estructura se ve afectada por las acciones de viento, lluvia, nieve y peso del cultivo y el recubrimiento por la radiación solar, temperatura y otros condicionantes (zonas con elevadas concentraciones de compuestos químicos o zonas con elevadas concentraciones de humedad salina) van afectando a la estructura y recubrimiento de tal forma que se necesita que periódicamente se revise prácticamente todos los elementos que lo componen.

Durante todo el período de vida útil y uso, se deberá tomar todas las medidas necesarias para la protección y mantenimiento del invernadero y de todos los elementos del mismo, cuidando de forma especial los automatismos y transmisores de las ventilaciones, los revestimientos y los posibles fenómenos de corrosión.

En caso de que se desee instalar el invernadero en lugares expuestos a la corrosión (cerca del mar, zonas industriales, sistemas de calefacción, etc.), se tendrá atención especial en el mantenimiento del invernadero y protección de las piezas más expuestas a la corrosión, como son los pilares y canalones, que deberán protegerse con una capa especial de pintura de protección antioxidante.

Antes de la primera puesta en marcha del invernadero se deberá limpiar y despejar las canales de restos de plástico, malla, perfiles de PVC, tornillos y otros accesorios…, ya que estos elementos además de obstruir y dificultar la circulación de agua pueden acelerar la oxidación de la canal.

 

Periódicamente se deberán realizar las siguientes tareas de mantenimiento del invernadero, así como revisión:

  • Cada año se realizará una revisión visual de las zonas expuestas a la corrosión, lavando con agua clara y secando de las zonas atacadas por la huella roja. Así mismo se realizará un limpiado o cepillado de las partículas corroídas no adherentes. Y en su caso, se aplicará un pasivador de herrumbre y protección con pintura rica en zinc.
  • También se deberá revisar y apretar la tornillería de las cruces de San Andrés y puertas puesto que están continuamente sometidas a esfuerzos de tracción y movimiento, respectivamente.
  • Se deberá pintar las bases de los pilares, así como colocar un monete de hormigón para protegerlos de corrosiones.
  • Es muy importante limpiar antes del período de lluvias, la tierra que se acumula dentro de las canales. Esta tierra suele retener durante el invierno gran cantidad de humedad, provocando oxidaciones en la canal.
